CHRISTMAS MARKET IN NIEDERDORF
The traditional Christmas market, the oldest in the city of Zurich, will take place this year from November until 23 December, as always on the festively decorated Hirschenplatz, on Niederdorfstrasse and in the Rosenhof. For a whole month, artisans and market traders offer the opportunity to stock up on lovingly home-made, handmade and especially beautiful gifts. The selected offerings at the fairytale Christmas bazaar in the Rosenhof with handicrafts, candles and artefacts from near and far will get you in the mood for the contemplative pre-Christmas period.
This Christmas market enchants with daily concerts. Anyone strolling along Bahnhofstrasse will sooner or later pass the Christmas market on Werdmühleplatz. It is one of the youngest Christmas markets in the city, but has long since wormed its way into the hearts of Zurich residents. This is probably due to its special feature, the “Singing Christmas Tree”: various choirs from the region perform the best of their Christmas repertoire on a lovingly decorated stage the height of a house in the shape of a Christmas tree.
Zurich’s “Lucy” Christmas lights make the world-famous Bahnhofstrasse shine in special splendour during the Advent season. Thousands of LEDs create moving clouds of light and a gentle rain of lights. When the Christmas lights are switched on at 6.00 pm. on 23 November, a “Night Shopping” period will be heralded in over 150 shops until 10.00 pm.
As one of the largest indoor Christmas markets in Europe, Zurich’s Christkindlimarkt is one of the city’s pre-Christmas crowd-pullers. Around 150 festively decorated market stalls delight visitors with original gift ideas, handicrafts from all over the world, delicacies and Christmas specialities. The large and sparkling Christmas tree, decorated with around 7,000 crystal ornaments, towers over the market like a landmark and is one of the most popular photo subjects in Zurich in the run-up to Christmas.
Visitors can expect an enchanting winter wonderland of light, illumination, illusion, music and culinary delights. A fantastic world that appeals to all the senses: a unique sea of lights in the courtyard of the National Museum Zurich, magical storytelling, glowing candy floss, mulled wine, concerts by mysterious mythical creatures and other playful surprises for young and old – staged by Yuki and her fabulous friends.
At 6.00 pm, hundreds of candle-lit boats are sent on an atmospheric journey on the Limmat from the Stadthausquai.
Zurich’s signature Christmas circus, Conelli, spans an arc from the world of classical circus to modernity and enchants guests with a feast of colour and fantasy as well as world-class performances.
